Counselling for our Clients – Talking about your journey and how Inspire IVF can help you.

Fertility treatment can be an emotional rollercoaster so getting support from people who can relate to what you’re going through is very important.

Can Stress and Anxiety Affect Our Fertility?

There is much scientific evidence to back up the widely held belief that stress can interfere with fertility.

Women are were less likely to conceive when they exhibit higher levels of a stress-related enzyme known as alpha-amylase.

The research is the first of its kind to suggest a biological basis for the long-held notion that stress can reduce a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant.

Some stress during pregnancy is normal, just as it is during other times of life. But if stress becomes constant, the effects on you and your baby could be lasting. If you can deal with your stress and move on, your stress response will recede and your body will go back into balance

Research shows that over half of all men wouldn’t be open to discussing fertility with their partner, yet they’re just as at risk of experiencing feelings of sadness, shame, anger, depression or inadequacy.

Some men also find it easier to speak to a counsellor who has experience working with men with fertility problems and who can be a trusted and impartial ‘outsider’.

How the IVF Journey can Effect Couples

The feeling and process of grief and loss associated with IVF at various stages throughout a couple’s journey is experienced often, and is perfectly normal.

However, unless these feelings are discussed openly with a trained counsellor, the lack of communication about one’s individual feelings can often lead to anger, resentment and blame, and have a negative effect on a couple’s relationship.

It is important that each individual and couple have someone they can talk to openly, whilst also coming to terms with discovering details about themselves, and the issues of fertility they are facing.

Talking About your Journey – Reducing your Stress Levels

Inspire IVF encourages our clients to seek counselling appointments where they can discuss their IVF journey in a safe, non-judgemental environment within which they can explore their thoughts, feelings and emotions whilst being provided with constant empathy, honesty and unconditional positive regard.

According to International IVF organisations, all couples should have counselling before, during, and after an IVF procedure as well as other assisted reproductive treatments. It is deemed beneficial not only for couples who have been through an unsuccessful treatment, but also for couples who are still undergoing treatment and those who have been through a successful IVF procedure and are now awaiting the birth of their child or adjusting to their new role as parents.

Embarking on the IVF journey makes couples vulnerable to the onset of many different, and sometimes conflicting, emotions. On one hand, the procedure may feel exciting and may fill couples with a hopeful feeling as they prepare to welcome a new addition to the family. On the other hand, they may also be filled with nervousness and anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as they proceed.

Counselling offered through Inspire IVF, with our Internationally qualified and experienced therapists, can help keep our clients on track and focused on the procedure while dealing with all these feelings.
